4th place giant bubble recipes: Corn syrup

Of all the giant bubble recipes, I liked this one the least. Mainly because it leaves your hands and fingers feeling sticky. And if the bubble pops on you, it makes everything even stickier. However, in a pinch, this recipe might be a good option if its the only ingredients you have on hand.

  • 1 1/2 cups corn syrup
  • One quart water (distilled or tap water)
  • 1 cup Dawn (or cup of dishwashing liquid)

3rd place: Corn starch and baking powder

Although giant bubbles did form with this recipe, they didn’t last very long. Apparently, if we want to get nerdy about this, cornstarch isn’t a very good polymer. This recipe is much like the corn syrup recipe, best used when you don’t have any other ingredients on hand.

  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 Tbs baking powder

2nd place: Glycerin

This one was a close second. Although this recipe created great bubbles, you have to use quite a bit of glycerin to create bubbles that won’t pop quickly. That made this recipe not very cost-effective. Although, glycerin is a good goo-maker for bubbles.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbs Dawn dish soap
  • 2 tablespoons of glycerin

1st place: Guar gum and rubbing alcohol

Guar gum is a thickening agent that you can buy at most whole foods stores or online here. When paired with rubbing alcohol, it forms a slurry soap film that creates these magnificent bubbles. They are strong bubbles that last so long! Here are the simple ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Guar gum powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2Tbs rubbing alcohol
  • 9.5 Tbs Dawn dish soap
  • 15 cups water (doesn’t have to be hot water)

Since this recipe only requires one teaspoon or Guar gum, it lasts forever. You don’t have to keep buying ingredients. I have used this recipes for years and it has always produced the best bubbles.

If you get your hands wet, you can actually put your hand inside the bubble! The younger kids and older kids went crazy at our water birthday party when they realized they could do that. They loved creating these colossal bubbles. It’s a great way to enjoy some bubble fun.
