How does Stripe verify identity? ›

Stripe captures photos of your face and reviews them to confirm that the photo ID belongs to you. They've built automated identity verification technology that uses distinctive physiological characteristics of your face (known as biometric identifiers) to match the photos of your face with the photo on the IDdocument.

Stripe ensures the security of verification data through encrypted connections, access controls, and by limiting access to only those who require it. Stripe will only use your verification data in accordance with the consent you granted before starting the verification process and our Privacy Policy.

With Stripe Identity, we were able to build a progressive verification experience. We start with an ID number check, and if that fails we automatically ask for an ID document.

ID cannot be expired. ID must not be redacted, altered, or damaged. All edges of ID must be visible. Check that your ID type is supported.

Stripe Authentication is an enhanced 3D Secure (3DS) flow that will enable transaction authentication using a verification method available on a cardholder's mobile devices or laptop, if selected by the cardholder.

Identity verification

If Stripe can't automatically verify your business and/or identity when you sign up for a Stripe account, you will need to upload a photo of your government ID. You will be notified if this is required.

To have a US Stripe account, you must be incorporated in the US and have a valid physical US address. Stripe will verify your legal entity name, entity type, EIN, and business address on your articles of incorporation or other documents. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted.

Why does Stripe want my ID? ›

It is part of Stripe's obligations to their banking partners to verify a company rep on the account. Stripe does not request this photo ID immediately when you are activating your account, they reach out by email as soon as you have started processing payments.

Stripe Authentication utilizes FIDO standards built around public key cryptography. A secure private key on the cardholder's device (which Stripe cannot access) generates an authentication code which can be used in conjunction with the public key to authenticate the online payment transaction.

Stripe requires customers to complete a Know Your Customer (KYC) process which includes verifying their business address with required documentation such as rental agreements, utility bills and tax returns.
