You can call us at 410-531-6677 or call, text or chat 988. The Grassroots Day Resource Center is open from 2-6 p.m. at 10390 Guilford Road, Suite A in Jessup. Individuals can receive hot meals and access laundry, showers, connections to social services and a food and clothing pantry. Grassroots was so fortunate to have been visited again by our friends at Guaranteed Rate, as well as Moises Rivas and his team at Rivas Landscaping. The team completed a wonderful project to make the outside of our Emergency Shelter beautiful and welcoming!The fantastic project was organized by Maggie Martinek, Guaranteed Rate Branch Manager, along with several volunteers. The Guaranteed Rate team has been an ongoing supporter of Grassroots, and we're so lucky! Among the many things they did, they replanted flower beds, resodded well-trodden areas, fixed bushes and planters, mulched, and brought warmth to the outdoor areas enjoyed by the families, individuals and children staying at the Grassroots emergency shelter. They have made numerous improvements to our outdoor spaces over the years, involving a dozen volunteers and thousands of dollars in supplies. May is Mental Health Awareness Month! As part of Grassroots’ efforts, we are displaying a poster with hopeful messages from local children. Last month, at Healthy Kids Day at the Dancel Y in Ellicott City, children shared pictures and sentiments to provide encouragement to individuals and families who visit our free, 24-hour Crisis Center. Grassroots’ Crisis Center provides free, walk-in counseling and mental health, substance use and homelessness services at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia. In addition, individuals can access our 24-hour food and hygiene pantry. It is so bittersweet that Grassroots says goodbye to Support Services Case Manager Gerald as he retires after more than 10 years at Grassroots. During his time here, his support and caring has helped make a difference in the lives of thousands of clients. He’s also made a difference in the lives of those who work at Grassroots.Gerald started at Grassroots as a Resident Assistant (RA) in 2013 becoming an RA Shift Supervisor the year after. In 2015, he won the Grassroots Spirit Award for his gentle caring nature, positive attitude, genuine concern for people, ethics and a spirit of helpfulness. In 2016, he became a Case Manager before being appointed Support Services Case Manager in 2023.Gerald is one of the biggest advocates for our clients, putting himself in their positions so he can empathetically understand what they are dealing with. He is able to recognize barriers and how to meet them, creating and prioritizing plans and goals to help individuals and families better their lives. He works hard to find the best ways for residents to get on their feet and into stable housing and knows how to help each one personally. He creates such meaningful relationships with clients, so much so that former residents often keep in touch with him.Gerald has been such a huge champion for Grassroots. He maintained love for his work and clients in the most human way possible. We will miss him so much and are so thankful for his many contributions! Thank you so much to all of the wonderful ladies in the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County who last night awarded Grassroots $6,000 as part of their Big Give 2024 initiative!The Women's Giving Circle Big Give 2024 was a fun, meaningful, fast-paced giving circle learning, connecting, and giving experience, where 53 women collectively gave $20,000 together to three nonprofit partners, including Grassroots. The grants will be used to support women and girls in Howard County."We firmly believe that women’s philanthropy is shaping the future for women and girls through the power of collective giving," said Melissa Curtin, WGC Big Give Chair. Grassroots was so excited to celebrate the grand opening of our Children’s Counseling Room last week along with the amazing Girl Scouts from Troop 1508. These wonderful ladies approached Grassroots in order to help our agency while they completed their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. We very much needed a child-friendly counseling room to provide comfort to kids who visit Grassroots for mental health support or while their families seek housing or related assistance. Thank you to County Councilwoman Christiana Mercer Rigby for joining our ribbon cutting! The girls developed everything about the new room from top to bottom, scoping out the project, planning, designing, painting, creating and managing all the facets, as well as gathering all the fun items like books, toys and furniture. They used their cookie sales money, while also working with a private donor who graciously supported this effort. In total, the girls and their parents devoted 368 hours to what will definitely be a fantastic resource for our young clients and families. They brought their hearts and love to this project, which can be felt the moment you walk through the door! We can’t thank you enough Caroline, Dior, Emma, Gabriella, Katelyn, Makenzie, Dara, Payton, Samantha, Zamora and troop leader Laura! You are absolutely amazing! From troop leader Laura: “It's been great partnering with Grassroots on this project, truly made a difference in the girls’ and their families’ lives as they were able to see the impact of their project. It's not always easy finding an organization willing to work with younger girls, and it's greatly appreciated. Thank you so much to the children of the Orthodox Church of St. Matthew who organized a donation drive for the Grassroots Crisis Center! The Sunday School children helped pull together a bounty of goodies for Grassroots including diapers, formula, Tide pods, water, soups, microwave meals, snacks and more. They created all the posters to advertise the drive at their church and even went shopping for additional items that were most needed for our pantry.We were so excited to receive these items and to know that our young neighbors are embracing philanthropy and helping the community who comes to Grassroots for support. You are amazing, and we were so glad to meet you!
