With Marvel Midnight Suns' campaign seeing the Mother of Demons and her army of hellspawn return in a bid to resurrect a fallen deity, it's clear Earth is facing something far more cataclysmic than a simple Avengers-level threat. Luckily, it has a stacked team of heroes waiting in the wings to enact justice.

With major Marvel names like Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Wolverine joining the order of the Midnight Suns in an effort to put a stop to Lilith's evil plans, its safe to say the roster for Firaxis' latest strategy epic is stacked.

So who should you take with you on a mission? Below we'll walk you through the best way to compose your squad in Midnight Suns and which heroes to rely on.

Best Team Compositions and Character Combos

Before we offer any specific advice on the best trios of heroes to take out on missions, let's quickly run through some of the basics regarding how to arrange your Midnight Suns. Although the game doesn't ever specifically label it, each of the characters you come across will fulfil a slightly different purpose.

Some are tanks you can throw directly into battle, able to land huge, earth-shattering attacks that send foes flying and do huge damage. Others are better hanging back, buffing heroes to add extra damage, healing allies in a pinch or inflicting debuffs on opponents. Meanwhile, a select few heroes are slightly more complex, able to set up weaker chained attacks that hit multiple opponents in one round.

For the sake of this character composition guide, we'll label each of these character classes as assault, support and technical. Unlike Firaxis' previous two strategy titles, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, you're not able to upgrade the size of your squad over the course of the game, meaning you'll always be stuck with just three squad mates. As such, your best tactic when building a squad is to have one assault hero, one support hero and one technical hero on hand.

Of course, a lot of this is down to personal preference. You may have unlocked particularly powerful decks for Nico and Scarlet Witch and want to use them both on a mission despite them filling similar roles in the team. However, for those struggling to find an effective squad, let's quickly run through each of these unofficial classes and the heroes that slot into them.

The Hunter

Before we dive into the other heroes, it's worth first looking at The Hunter. Unlike the other heroes whose card decks have a specific focus in mind, The Hunter is a bit of a clean slate. They're a strong offensive attacker, have a range of useful defensive options and can support their allies using healing magic.

In essence, they cover all three of our classes, allowing you to mould them into an assault, support or technical hero. However, your best bet is to find a balance of all three. The Hunter will be required to partake in every single story mission, meaning it's a smart idea to make them adaptable to any and all situations.

When assembling their deck, make sure to throw in abilities like heal, fortify and cure to give them good support options. Meanwhile, slot in a mix of quick attacks, knockback attacks (the whip quickly becomes a brutal damage dealer when levelled up) and powerful hero cards to round out the deck. Considering your hunter will usually be the highest levelled hero in your squad, it's worth finessing their deck early on to get the best results.

Assault Heroes

As mentioned above, assault heroes are best used on the front lines of the fight. They can tank a lot of hits and deal a lot of damage. Your main priority with assault heroes is having a support hero to keep them healed up and strengthen their attacks with buffs. Technical heroes may also be good at taunting enemies, drawing their attention while assault heroes heal up and continue to deal damage.

Here are all the heroes we've designated as assault heroes:

Technical Heroes

Technical heroes are slightly more complex than assault heroes, often relying on specific mechanics or buffs that allow them to set up multiple enemies and take them down efficiently. If assault heroes are the front line, these guys are much better hanging back and using their abilities to take enemies down over multiple rounds.

Here are all the heroes we've designated as technical heroes:

Support Heroes

Support heroes are you warriors in the wings. Although most of them can pack a punch if played right, they're most valuable when used as a crutch to support the technical and assault heroes. Use your support to heal other heroes, inflict brutal debuffs or fire destructive ranged attacks.

Here are all the heroes we've designated as support heroes:

An ally that can deal high damage while he backs them up from afar. Doctor Strange is arguably the most cut-and-dry support character in the game. An ally that can draw fire from Nico as she debuffs enemies, heals the party and inflicts brutal damage. Recommended Combos

So now we've established a rough class system for each hero, which combos should you lean on? As mentioned earlier, you'll find a lot of success by mixing and matching heroes from each group, but for those looking for the most efficient teams, let's run through some of the best trios available.

It's worth noting that you can sub the Hunter in for whichever assault or support hero is shown below, assuming your deck is mostly balanced between offensive and defensive cards. Considering they're involved in all of the game's story missions, you'll quickly get used to using them in place of healers or heavy damage dealers.

Hero #1Hero #2Hero #3
Captain Marvel, Blade and Nico. A good early squad to use right at the beginning of the game. Captain Marvel is your damage sponge and dealer, taking blows and hitting back. Blade is in the background spreading bleed to enemies and upgrading his power. Meanwhile, Nico is lowering the cost of high-heroism attacks and buffing both allies.
Ghost Rider, Captain America and Nico. Ghost Rider is going to do the majority of the heavy lifting here, using his brutal move set to decimate enemies. Captain America will join him, using Dig In when available to lure away enemy fire when Ghost Rider's abilities drain his health significantly. Nico will also be able to keep Ghost Rider's health topped up, using her healing abilities to keep the team in check.
Magik, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Magik and Spider-Man will work in tandem here, with Magik using her abilities to reposition enemies so that Spider-Man can chain attacks together and clear the battlefield fast. Doctor Strange's Blessing of Vishanti spell will give Spider-Man increased damage, allowing him to finish off enemies quickly and efficiently.
Wolverine, Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Wolverine's quick attacks will make him a generator for heroism here, with the goal being to power up Iron Man's most devastating abilities. Nico's Blood Magic card will also allow hero cards to be used for free, so she'll potentially offer a quick route to unleashing Iron Man's best moves. The three together will give you the means to create tons of heroism and cash it in on moves that change the tide of the battle.
Captain Marvel, Captain America and Scarlet Witch. This team is entirely focused on giving Scarlet Witch time to unleash her true power. Captain Marvel and Captain America will both be on damage-soaking duty, taking hits for Scarlet Witch while she uses hex on enemies and builds the ability's power. Eventually, she'll be able to destroy anyone and anything on the battlefield, while her two bodyguards eat the shots she can't take.
Wolverine, Blade and Nico. This one is all about roles. Wolverine is the frontlines, taking the fight to the enemy and likely soaking up the majority of their attacks. Meanwhile, Blade is activating and inflicting bleed in the background, infecting the major enemies on the field. Finally, Nico is making sure both are healed while also unlocking their best abilities with Blood Magic.
Spider-Man, Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Breaking the class system here for a team-up that just works. Although Spider-Man and Iron Man aren't traditional heavy hitters, together, they complement each other's weaknesses. Spider-Man is fast and generates heroism quickly due to his chain attacks and quick attacks. Iron Man needs a lot of heroism to charge his best moves, but will decimate foes once he does. In short, Spider-Man primes the first and Iron Man throws the punch. Meanwhile, Doctor Strange buffs both of them to make sure the fight is finished quickly.
Spider-Man, Wolverine and Scarlet Witch. This is your pure power team. Spider-Man can deal a ton of damage without using many card plays, Wolverine can take multiple enemies down in succession and Scarlet Witch can use all the generated heroism to charge hex and end the fight in the blink of an eye. Your only concern is healing, although Wolverine will be able to take the brunt of the damage and use his self-healing to stay in the fight.
